Windows 7 Brings More 64-Bit Machines To The Forefront

Microsoft hit a home run with the advent of Windows 7. Garnering very positive reviews and feedback, Windows 7 has improved the functionality of its operating system far above the release of Windows Vista. In addition to the many enhancements added to Windows 7, support for 64-bit machines was also included. As users and organizations migrate toward Windows 7, statistics show that 64 bit edition is the preferred choice over the 32-bit edition of Windows 7.

Just under fifty percent of computers using Windows 7 employed the 64-bit edition. In comparison, only eleven percent of all users purchased the higher bit version of Windows Vista. The operation and advantage of using the 64-bit version of Windows 7 comes in the form of addressing more memory registers. The 32-bit Windows 7 can only view up to four gigabyte of RAM memory and utilize approximately three gigabyte as the extra gigabyte of memory is reserved for the operating system. In comparison and in theory a 64-bit version of Windows 7 can approximately address seventeen billion gigabytes of RAM memory. In reality, the advanced versions of Windows 7 versions can use as many as one hundred ninety two gigabytes. The lower and Windows 7 editions have a lower memory limit.

As memory continues to drop in price, is far less expensive to add memory and increased speed in a hardware system. Add to that the ability of today's central processing units to utilize 64-bit in an operating system a greater number of original equipment manufacturers have moved toward the 64-bit environment.

Stephen Baker, an analyst with the NPD Group stated approximately seventy seven percent of all personal computers that were sold within the United States retail market in the month of April arrived with the 64-bit Windows 7 edition already installed. It is estimated within the next four years about seventy five percent of all businesses that use personal computers will utilize Windows 7 64-bit.

In using a 64-bit Windows operating system specialized hardware drivers are required as the 32-bit hardware drivers will not work in the higher bit environment. Older peripherals including scanners, printers, and related hardware devices will become a concern as the possibility exists that they do not possess 64-bit drivers. Microsoft has a Windows 7 Compatibility website that will allow you to search for a particular hardware or software to find out if it will operate under the 64-bit version of Windows.
