New Online XP Attack Gives Reason To Move To Windows 7

As Windows XP nears closer and closer towards the end date, intrusion attacks are increasing with a greater frequency. A recently reported Windows XP flaw was blitzed by cyber criminals seeking a new way in to the operating system. As described by Microsoft, "In the beginning, we saw researchers testing safe proof-of-concepts. Then, the first real public exploits came forth. Those initial vulnerabilities were targeted and to an extent limited. Lately, attacks have increased." The attempted intrusions appear to be in the areas of Russia, the United States, Brazil, Germany, and Portugal. Portugal and Russia are being hit the hardest. The intrusion attacks also appeared to take place within a week’s time frame. Cyber criminals seem to be attempting to send various Trojans, viruses and a malware named Obitel. The duty of Obitel is to insert itself and download even more insidious malware.
The vulnerability in questions appears to reside within the Help and Support Center that ships with Windows XP. Microsoft advises turning off the Help Center Protocol in Windows XP, and provides instructions on its security advisor web site.
