Get A Taste Of Microsoft Office 2010 Web Apps Now

Microsoft is slowly ramping up the excitement for their soon to be released Office 2010 suite. By releasing a foretaste of their Web apps, users can obtain an idea of the new functions and how they can integrate them into their own workflows. All it takes is a Windows Live account, your personal web browser of choice, and one of your Office files to load to Microsoft’s Live SkyDrive, their free online space of storage.
If you don’t already own a Live account, one can be obtained by going to Microsoft’s site, Windows Live, and signing up. After signing in, choose the More menu option and choose SkyDrive. From here, follow the screen instructions and upload your Office file, such as Excel spreadsheet or PowerPoint doc, when you choose Add Files.
Once complete, you will be able to view your SkyDrive folder, and an invite to enter the preview program. After the usual legal agreements, you are on your way to the Web apps. If the invite does not appear, click on any of your documents, and you will be transported to a location where another document icon and links appear. Choose the Edit link and the Web app will begin to operate.
Depending on the type of file you uploaded will determine which Web app executes. If you loaded a Word file, you can only currently view the file. Good news, the formatting of the file is retained so you don’t lose it in the process. The full functionality of the Word section will be in the final product.
Excel spreadsheets in the Web app operate slightly different than the local product. The formulas are executed by entering the equals sign (‘=’) in a cell instead of the formula bar, with a letter to follow the equals. A drop down menu will appear with formulas for you to choose as necessary.
PowerPoint presentations will currently allow files with the extension of ‘.pptx’ to be edited. New PowerPoint files can also be created in SkyDrive.
To try out the Web apps and discover more about the upcoming features, go to the Microsoft Office Web Apps and give them a spin.
