This gives alternative solutions for the team member to consider in the future and lends itself to the practice of making good decisions. Again, it is a confidence booster.
As tasks are delegated, remember the person receiving the task needs an amount of wiggle room in their performance. If you are a person with very high standards, the person who received the task may not live up to your level. They only need to perform as well as the task required. It is impossible to expect and receive their performance as exactly what you would do in the same circumstance. A measure of objectivity is required from you. Therefore, lay down the foundation of standards and criteria necessary for the task to be called a success. Also, expect mistakes. Monitor the task and snare the mistake before it becomes larger and gains a life of its own. Provide input of what could have been done to alleviate the mistake and the directions to take that would have provided a better outcome. This way it becomes a positive learning experience. Using this method, you also teach risk management when making decisions, allowing for a more thoughtful process towards choosing the best answer and course of action.
What you decide to delegate to others depends on the level of experience you have, and how well you can explain the task and train others to handle it. You gain more time for yourself, and the team member learns other duties that lighten your load. As their experience becomes stronger, they will be able to accept more of your workload. An added bonus arrives when the team member discovers a more innovative method to accomplish the task. Instead of following a boring, mundane process, they envision more efficient ways to arrive at the same point. It is also possible their creative innovations will become new standards.
